Transfer of residence relief

Belgium applies the EU transfer-of-residence rules. Used personal belongings normally enter free of duty and VAT when you are genuinely moving your normal residence into the EU, having lived outside it for at least twelve months and owned and used the goods for at least six months.
Registration with the commune

Belgian administration runs through the commune, and proof of your registration at your new address is generally part of the file. It is worth starting that step early, because it is not always immediate.
One inventory, two languages

Belgium is multilingual and the language of the file can depend on where you land. We prepare the inventory so that it is usable in either French or Dutch rather than discovering at the border that it is in the wrong one.
