Moving from Morocco to the Netherlands

The Netherlands can be reached two ways from Morocco, and that choice is the first thing we settle. Overland through Spain, France and Belgium keeps everything on one truck. By sea into Rotterdam, one of the largest ports in the world, a container can work out better for large volumes. Which one suits you depends on how much you are moving.

Road or sea: choosing the route

From Morocco
Via Road or sea
To The Netherlands

Transit time. Typically 8 to 12 days door to door by road. A sea routing into Rotterdam takes appreciably longer and depends on the sailing schedule.

For a normal household, the overland route is usually the right answer. It avoids container handling entirely, your belongings are loaded once and unloaded once, and the timetable is predictable because it does not depend on a sailing schedule.

For large volumes, a full villa or a household with heavy furniture, the sea route into Rotterdam becomes competitive. It takes longer and adds terminal handling at both ends, but the cost per cubic metre falls sharply once the volume is high enough to justify a dedicated container.

Customs

Customs when entering the Netherlands

  1. Transfer of residence relief

The Netherlands applies the EU transfer-of-residence rules. Used household goods normally enter free of duty and VAT when you are genuinely moving your normal residence into the EU, having lived outside it for at least twelve months and owned and used the goods for at least six months.

  2. BSN and municipal registration

Dutch administration runs on registration with the municipality and a citizen service number. Proof that you are registering at your new address generally forms part of the customs file, so it is worth starting early.

  3. Sea arrivals add a terminal step

If your load enters through Rotterdam as a container, expect terminal handling and inspection scheduling on top of the customs file itself. It is not difficult, but it is a step the overland route does not have.

Yes, and we plan for it. Those staircases are famously steep and narrow, which is exactly why many Dutch buildings have a hoisting beam above the facade. We check the access before quoting.

No, that is something you do in person. We tell you which documents the customs file needs and when, so the two processes do not end up blocking each other.

Yes, usually on departures shared with Belgium and northern France. It is the most economical option for a partial household.
